Katja Mouvlin is an artist and designer based in Melbourne. (BFA Monash/MoA RMIT)
Katja’s work obsessively ruminates on mythos and symbology, drawn from a myriad of sources including medieval religious elements and ukiyo-e. These symbols are consumed, perverted, and controllingly displayed as ‘mis en place’ to form a personal visual language, within which ideas of discomfort, self-reflection, and grotesque sexuality are explored.
Themes of personal narrative, internal critique and family are recurring, visually formed by an underlying censorial anxiety which distills down information to a few vital signs in order to make sense of the world. Her work is an attempt to create a space that oscillates between comfort, and discomfort, the familiar and the absurd.
ULTRAFRAGOLA is a meditation on how bestial sexual urge and desire intersect, with an absurd and dangerous conclusion on how to satisfy our animal drives.
